The mail and the guardian analysis

The daily mail presents their page with a lot of color. Along the very top of the article they have the date and the weather forecast, which shows it is up to date and frequent information. They also have a row of subheadings, including home, news, sport and health. If you then click on one it will give you another row of subheadings relative to the topic you've chose. For example the one i clicked on was news, and it gave me the option of latest headlines, royal family, news, world news etc. This is useful as it makes things more quick and convenient for the user to find what they are specifically interested in. Just underneath the subheadings are advertisement, as well as along the right side of the column, these include their twitter and Facebook pages as well as Instagram, snap-chat and pinterest. They have all these to make their website more known and easy to access from all types of platforms. As you can see they have a main twitter advertisement which is @mailonline which is targeted at those who want 'world news' and breaking stories as well as another twitter account which is @dailymailceleb, targeted at those who prefer the more gossip type of news. This ad shows that they are trying to target all types of audiences instead of just one.

Scrolling down, you get the lead story of 'terrifying moment gang corner their victim and slash him with a huge 3.5ft long machete as they dish out vicious beating on residential street in Birmingham'. This is in bold big text to grab the readers attention of the horrific event and to make it more obvious to see so that the article can be seen and shared for awareness. The article gives the skyline followed by a little 3 sentence headline about what happened, where it happened and who was involved. This must be interesting as it is the decider on if the reader wants to carry on reading the article. It then presents a byline, confirming who wrote the article, when it was published and last updated, as well as giving another ad to promote you to share the article through Facebook, twitter, messenger and mail, also giving you a number of how many people have shared the article already, which for this one is 3.7k.

Further down it gives the body text about what happened to the boy as well as a pull quote from a pedestrian. It gives a few main images of the gang with the machete and more pictures of the lined up weapons once being taken away with captions underneath to describe and give the reader more context. It then gives more information about the crime which then goes onto showing figures of police recorded crime and what % of these were murders, robberies etc. This is important to the reader as it gives them more understanding. Afterwards it gives another relative case to make the audience feel sympathy, it is about a 16 year old boy who died because of gang violence. Going on from this, it goes on to saying how the Metropolitan Police are finding it harder to work with the House office rules, so they want to reinforce rules. This fits in with the whole article because its a case which isn't big enough to put on its own but it slots in with the crime topic so can be put at the end to make people aware instead of ignoring it completely.

Throughout the whole article, there is separate stories along the right hand column, mainly to do with celebrity gossip. This is so that the reader can directly link from one article to another instead of searching through to find one. In this article there is in total 63 different side stories that you can then go onto looking at, for example some of them are to do with the new series of Im a Celebrity get me out of here and one on the science of beauty and others on a load of different celebrities, such as, Cara Delevingne, Scarlett Moffatt and Vicky Pattison.

The Guardian presents their articles in a more plain, formal way compared the the daily mail. They are known as a broadsheet so need to present that in the representation of their pages. At the very top they have the masthead along with a few different links to click onto including a search button, a job search and sign in. The sign in button is very useful to those people who are only interested in specific news. When you sign up, you can choose some topics your most interested in and those will be the ones that come up on your feed once you sign in. This can save a lot of time for the reader and make them want to use the website more. In the top left corner is their first advertisement on the page, it simply asks people to subscribe and donate to the guardian to ensure good news is still brought to the website, which works really successfully for them. This saves them having to charge the readers to view the articles as they would most likely lose a lot of readers by doing this. Just underneath is the main subheadings for the page, the main ones are news, opinion, sport, culture and lifestyle. The one is the video above is on lifestyle, as you can see it directly takes you to the article relevant to that. Beneath this is the lead story with the main image and a caption below. The lead story is 'Westminster council to ban supersize new homes', the title is bigger and bolder than the body text, making it clear to see to the readers. The story is about the council setting a 150 square meter limit on housing so they can build more affordable houses and that they will build 10,000 affordable units by 2040 with all the freed up space. It then further goes onto talking about the statistics about the average sized UK house and that the supersize housed are 50% bigger than this, which is ridiculous. The ban has been put in place to try and tackle the growing inequality in the area, making houses more affordable for those who dont have much to move into. The article then uses a pull quote from Richard Beddoe (council) to better explain the situation - “We want Westminster to be home to thriving, mixed communities, not empty super-prime properties. That’s why we will be restricting the size of new luxury apartments and introducing a new extra bedroom policy to make it easier for families to extend their homes so they have enough space to stay living in Westminster and are not forced to move out." This is good for the reader to have a pull quote so that an opinion can be put in place which is different to the articles view, this will allow the reader to make their own opinion after seeing both sides.

Along the right hand column, there is a 'most viewed' section, showing the most popular stories of today to try and influence you to later click from article to article. The articles show a small circular picture with a brief title alongside it, for example there is one about Teresa May which says "May calls emergency cabinet meeting to sign off Brexit deal", the quick and short caption can easily intrigue the reader into finding out more, which makes them more likely to view it afterwards. At the bottom of the article there is a separate part for advertisement. 'Since your here' is stated in bold big writing and underneath is a paragraph of body text which explains they need a bit of financial support to carry on and would love to get a donation, they also have a direct link which you can click and pay to, it also shows that you can pay by Visa, MasterCard, American Express and PayPal.

What do you notice about the difference in content and how the articles convey this information? Why do you think that is?
The times presents their information in a more formal way, this gives the audience more comfort because the newspaper isn’t worrying. The use of the word ‘arrested’ shows that the nasty man is locked away and won’t be able to do further damage. They also give no detailed information or information about the weapon used. The pictures they use are minimal, they don’t tell the whole story in the picture so that it will intrigue people into reading the article instead
The daily mirror conveys a more informal aspect, making the audience a bit more on edge. The use of the word ‘held’ to describe how the man had been caught, implies he might be let back out whereas the broadsheet shuts it down by saying he’s been arrested. The daily mirror shows lots more pictures, involving the exact building, the parents and the weapon. This gives the audience more initial information, and by seeing the pictures they can interpret the story. The title is also much more bold than the broadsheet, making it stand out more.

Newspapers

With newspapers, we are going to be studying online, social and participatory. Online includes mail websites, such as the guardian or daily mail, social includes Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, and participatory includes comments that the audience or press may of made.
Newspapers came around in the 17th century, it was the only way of bringing news to the public until the 20th century when you could view versions online. The Leveson inquiry (2011), which involved all phones being hacked into from different services led to code of conduct for online and tighter controls to follow, Newspapers are largely in decline in terms of print circulation, they have had to adapt and move online for survival of business.

The market of newspapers has 3 different headings, populars, mid market and quality.
The 'populars' include the sun, the mirror, the people and the star.
The 'mid market' includes the daily mail, the metro, the daily mail and the Sunday mail
The 'quality' includes the telegraph, the guardian, the times and the independent

In the context of layout, there are two different types of newspapers, tabloids and broadsheets:
Tabloid:
  • Big text
  • Gives brief information about headline
  • Gives a page number to go to for information
  • More colour
  • Big, more frequent pictures
  • Clear headlines
  • Title doesnt stand out
  • Comedy/pun headlines
  • The information is gossipy and all about celebrities
  • Informal
  • Less informative and not in depth
  • Not proper news
  • Freebies
  • Aimed at groupings C2, D and E
Broadsheets:
  • One main picture
  • Tiny font (more info)
  • Large title
  • Bigger sized copy (more value for your money)
  • Detailed subheading
  • The titles has meaning e.g. the daily telegraph has old font
  • Formal
  • Good news
  • Reliable information
  • Aimed at groupings A, B and C1

Boys in the hood

Mise on scene -
C - Tre is presented formally with his clothes and the fact he is presented to be well educated. This contrasts to a stereotypical American boy of the era. The teacher is dressed in more informal clothing than the boy, foreshadowing the lack of responsibility and control she takes of the class.
L - Natural day lighting in used throughout.
A - The main character is the young boy and his friends. They set the scene and era of the film, making it easier to understand from the beginning.
M - There is no makeup during this.
P - The poster of the president is a key prop as it has the bullet holes through it signifying the hate and violence within the neighbourhood.
S - The setting varies from outside to inside. Whilst outside the children act as normal baring in mind theirs police sirens, gun shots and crime scenes, but they act as if that's normal to them. Whereas when their inside its as if there safer as their in school and the setting is more normal to what the audience is used to seeing.

Sound -
M - None
C - None
D - Diegetic sounds are used throughout, for example, dog barking, police sirens and gun shots. These are used to emphasise the fact the neighbourhood isn't safe.
O - The noises are shown off screen during the opening, even when the credits are being shown in front of a blank screen. This is done so that the audience immediately know what the opening is like before you see anything.
V - None
E - Confused, worried, scared, unsafe.
D - Tre is presented to be smart and intelligent for his young age, this is confirmed when his teacher rings to his mum about how developed his vocabulary and speech is.

Genre -
D - The opening includes a fact, this sympathises the audience into making them feel bad for the scenery the children live in.
I - The short trailer shows the children's take on their neighbourhood and how they live in it. The neighbourhood contrasts to a normal child's neighbourhood, which is fun and enjoyable.
S - Rough neighbourhood, stray dogs eating out of rubbish on the streets. Crime scenes.
T - violence and corruption
I - Blood and the bullets through the posters.
N - The path of following children to teenagers and showing their future.
C - The children, teacher and Tre's mother.
T - Slang has been used to help foreshadow the future of the neighbourhood.

Editing -
S - Tre has the most camera time in this clip, this shows that further on her could be the main character.
T - The transitions are very smooth to keep it as real as possible
O - The trailer is in chronological order. It presents a time period of about 1970's.
P - The pace seems very rushed at the beginning due to the gun shots and police sirens. The pace changes to slower once all the characters are introduced.
S - None

Ghost ship

Ghost ship
D - This is a hyper-genre film.
I - It mixes two contrasting genres in the opening, romance and horror
S - Its set in the middle of the sea on a cruise at night. This makes the characters seem vulnerable because if anything happened, no one would be around to help.
T - The theme initially sets off seeming romantic, this is shown in many ways. It starts as the credits are in pink swirly writing and many couples are dancing with one another whilst the woman sings a slow/romantic song. Then suddenly the theme changes to horror when the lever is pulled, sequencing in all the horrible actions took place afterwards. The music changes as it starts to echo over the loud noise of the wire moving, this gives off screen music, giving a creepy effect on the audience.
I -The icons include the lever, this is what makes everything in the movie suddenly change sois significant in this respect. The wire is also a very important icon as it is the main prop which indicates the genre of the film.
N - The narrative is the woman singing as there is no actual words said in the opening. The singer indicates the mood that the characters are feeling.
C - The main character in the opening is the woman who is singing, she seems to be given the most screen time at the beginning, this could be important later on. The focus then slowly moves to the young girl as she is the only person left alive after the wire incident.
T -

F -
A - When focusing on the women, the camera is mainly at eye level, this could portray that she sees everything, like shes the cameras eyes. The camera shows many shots of everyone dancing from a high/birds eye angle, showing everyone is vulnerable to whats about the happen.
M - The camera uses track movement when moving through the dance floor as if the camera was one of the dancers. It also uses crab movement when doing this to give a separate effect to the track.

C - All the characters are wearing formal clothes, implying it is a wealthy cruise. The woman singing is wearing all red which could foreshadow that something dangerous is going to happen.
L - The lighting is low key, it is nighttime so the lights are quite dull and dim. This firstly can be used to set a romantic scene but on the other hand can be used in horror.
A -
M -
P - The prosecco and flowers are good props to indicate wealth and the class.
S -

S - The little girl gets the most screen time. At the start she is shown then keeps getting took back to and then at the end of the clip she is in it the whole time. They do this because it gives the audience time to try and figure out things about her instead of just immediately throwing her into it as it makes it more interesting. She also ends up being the only one left alive as she was too small to catch the wire. We dont further know why the directors did this.
T - It seems to be shown in real life, however because a lot happens in the beginning i believe it may go past in time through the rest of the movie to then build up to this scene again.
O - The clip is in chronological order
P - The pace when everything is fine is quite slow but then as soon as the lever is pushed it suddenly becomes fast pace and everything happens in such a short amount of time. They made some parts slow motion so the audience could really capture what was going on.

Camera shots, angles and movements

In this task, we had to recreate all these camera shots, angles and movements presented on the sheet below.

We were put into groups of 3, one person being behind the camera and the other two mix and matching imitating the camera shots. We used various props to make the shots as realistic as possible e.g. we used a chair to achieve the outcome of the birds eye view. We tried to use a white board to make it clear which shot we were attempting. We videoed every shot, angle and movement and put them all together into a longer video which is shown below, this gave a nice rolling effect as all the different camera movements ect. Are shown in action properly. We did this to experiments with the different effects the shots had when filming.

Shot sizes
XLS (extra longshot) - used for setting the scene, makes the person look isolated and vulnerable

LS (longshot) - from a considerable distance, from head to toe. Usually intended to place it in some relation to the surroundings.

MLS (medium longshot) - This shot is from the knees up. Nomrally used when theres more than one person in a shot.

MS (medium shot) - Shot from the waist up. Used to viewers can capture the characters emotion.

MCU (medium closeup) - Shot from the chest up. Often used to allow the viewer to pick up on characters movements and actions.

CU (closeup) - frames the characters head and shoulders.

BCU (big closeup) - Just the face. Can easily capture characters emotion.

XCU (extreme closeup) - Often used in horror to show a quick/instant change in emotion.

Shot angles
Low - When the camera is placed below the character, making the character seem more powerful.

Eye level - When the camera is equal level to the character, usually used when the character is speaking ect.

High - Camera looks down on the character. This belittles the character, making them seem vulnerable.

Worms eye - More dramatic than the low angle. Used for a dramatic effect, making the character seem dominant.

Canted - The camera is tilted, creating a dizzy/drunk effect.

Birds eye - An extreme high angle, used so you can see the surroundings from a distance.
Camera lens and movement
Pan - moving your camera left to right whilst its base is fixed on a certain point
Crab - The camera moves in a smooth crabbing motion
Track - A smooth walking in/out motion, gives the same effect as a 'zoom', just without the actual lens moving
Zoom (lens) - An even smoother motions than the above, it is done via the lens to no movement of the camera man has to take place, making it easier to achieve.
Ped - The whole camera moves up and down the subject vertically, different to a tilt as the whole camera follows.
Tilt - The camera stays in the same position but the angle of the camera tilts vertically up and down the subject.

Denotation and connotation

 Denotation:
-3 younger boys on bikes, looks like their going on an adventure
-The boys are wearing certain outfits with a machine on their back
-The younger girl at the top looks more scary/powerful than the people beneath her
-The same girl has blood coming from her nose
-There is a big 'monster' in red
-The things lower to the ground are blue
-The things higher up are red
-There is pumpkins at the very edge of the page at the bottom
-All the characters are in the center
-There is lightning in the background
-There's a car and some sort of creature in the distance

Connotations:
-The 3 boys being at the bottom of the page could show that they are less powerful than those above them
-The boys are wearing outfits and machines, implying their are maybe fighting away monsters
-The boys are on bikes because they are being chased and arnt fast enough by themselves
-The younger girl is the most powerful, this is shown by her hand actions and the fact shes above everyone else. This could imply she is a main part of the series.
-The big monster shows danger because of the color red
-The monsters arms/legs are curving around the bunch of people, implying the characters are trapped.
-The monster is at the top of the poster, even above the girl, implying the monster overpowers the girl
-The pumpkins show the Halloween theme, which is a season known to be more scary than the others.
-All characters are bunched together, showing all the characters may come together in the series.
-The lightning in the back gives an extra effect that there is evil. But the fact its so far in the distance shows its not the main focus.
-The car and creature in the back could imply the boys being chased by them as they are the only full characters on the same level as them.

DISTINCT:

D - A popular series on Netflix
I - Which has many characters and things going on throughout the series. From the poster you can tell this as it is jam packed with different themes and colors.
S - The setting is very thrilling, with creatures/monsters in the background and also in the focus. The poster is set on a street which has nothing on it, this is done so that all the focus is on the characters and its not distracted by street houses ect.
T - The theme seems to mainly be good vs evil. This is portrayed through the colors as it is red to blue which contrasts with eachother. And red conveys danger/evil which is the opposite to blue. Blue shows the sky and good things like heaven. Character wise it will be like people vs monsters.
I - A significant prop in Stranger things is the bikes the teenage boys ride. It is shown to be important considering their are 3 of them and they are used frequently throughout the series.
N - It is an action packed series. So far it has been told over 2 seasons and they are currently working on a 3rd.
C - All the main characters are in the poster. There is a mixture of boys and girls as well as mythical characters who are used to endure the audience.
T - The camera angle is medium long shot
